For 2004, the Optima returns with a renamed model line-up. Models now include the LX, LX Automatic, LX-V6, EX, and EX-V6. A 138-hp 2.4L four-cylinder engine is standard on the LX and EX, while a 170-hp 2.7L V-6 powers the LX V6 and EX V6. All models include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, and dual power mirrors.

According to Kia Motors, the name "Kia" derives from the Sino-Korean words ki ("to come out") and a (which stands for Asia), it is roughly translated as arise or come up out of Asia or rising out of Asia.
