Volkswagen Golf joins 25-million club

Volkswagen has built its 25 millionth Golf - a Tornado Red 1.4 TSI DSG - at its factory in Wolfsburg.

Golf production started in 1974, and to begin with it was relatively slow; it took three years to build the first million cars. By that time, Volkswagen had introduced the GTI to the UK market, a fact celebrated with the introduction of the Edition 30 model (see road test ).

"A total of 25 million vehicles in 33 years ??“ that is an outstanding achievement of which we can all be proud," said Plant Manager Dietmar Korekwa as the historic car came off the production line. "Over 15 million Golf models have been built in Wolfsburg alone. My thanks go to all employees for their commitment ??“ day in, day out ??“ over many years. Together, we will continue the Golf success story."

Wolfsburg is nowadays the largest car factory in the world under one roof. It sits in just over six square kilometres of ground which also contains hospitals, a train station, a 75km road network and two power stations which provide energy to the town.
