Arrow BMW promises more from new X5

BMW's New, Improved X5

The new X5 goes on sale soon and BMW boldly promises that it will reset the standard by which sports activity vehicles are judged.

The new X5 features an enviable list of world firsts in the sports activity market, including head-up display, adaptive drive, and active steering. It also says it will be offering a range of engines with more power, better fuel consumption, and lower emissions than its predecessor.

Prices here are reported to be something like this: 3.0si SE - 78,750; 4.8i SE 102,950, and 3.0d SE - 79,400;

A chassis incorporating BMWs renowned xDrive four-wheel-drive set-up, the latest dynamic stability control+ stability system, and a double wishbone front suspension (a first for a production BMW) promises the best-in-class driving dynamics.

The optional third row seating configuration for added practicality is another first for a BMW.

According to the European press information any new X5s equipped with a Dynamic package will be equipped with V-rated tyres for higher road speeds. This package includes individual anthracite headlining, sports steering wheel, electrically-adjusted sports seats, high-gloss shadowline, sports suspension, unique 19-inch alloy wheels, and Nevada leather upholstery.

BMW bullishly believes that no other SAV comes close in terms of the combination of driving dynamics, style, practicality, luxury, and exclusivity. The company says while rivals might lay claim to better off-road performance or a greater luggage capacity, none covers all the basics like the X5 and none surpasses its on-road capability. They claim the 600,000 buyers of the first X5 are proof their formula was right.

The old model handled superbly and it looked well, but it was not very spacious, flexible, or even practical. BMW says it has addressed these and other points.

We will reserve judgement until testing the new X5 on Irish roads.
