Last Chevrolet Impala NASCAR Win Made History In 1963

The Chevrolet Impala returns to action today at Bristol Motor Speedway in NASCAR's premier series seeking Chevrolet's milestone 600th win, 43 years after Impala last took the checkered flag in the historic victory by Wendell Scott ???‚¬??? the only African-American driver ever to win a major NASCAR event.

"It's not known to many people that the last win by Impala was one of great significance to the sport of stock-car racing," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "Wendell Scott's win paved the way for minority racing success."

Scott drove a 1962 Impala to victory at Jacksonville Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Fla. on December 1, 1963.

Scott, a native of Danville, Va. who died in 1990, was elected into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999.
