Arrow Mitsubishi to launch Outlander this year

New Delhi, June 25 (IANS) Japanese car major Mitsubishi Motors Monday said it will not join the race for manufacturing small cars in India and will instead launch its small sports utility vehicle (SUV) Outlander later this year.

'We are not planning to launch any small car in India for the time being. But later this year we will launch Outlander, which will be our fifth car in India,' said Kazyuki Kambayashi, general manager (Asia and ASEAN) of Mitsubishi, while unveiling a new version of Montero here.

'We are open to ideas as the small car market is booming in India and we are still studying it. But we want to strengthen our hold in the SUV segment as Pajero and Montero are still our best selling vehicles worldwide,' he said.

Kazyuki said that back in Japan, Mitsubishi is working to develop electric cars to counteract competition from Honda and Toyota.

'Alternative fuel is now a big issue everywhere and Honda's hydrogen powered car and Toyota's hybrid vehicle have forced us to walk the same path. We are working to build a technology for electricity powered cars,' he said.

Kazyuki added that if the technology works out then it might be incorporated in small car Colt that was launched two years back in Japan's domestic market.

'We may trying to launch an electric version of Colt in Japan but it is a tough job as charging the car will be a big problem. So if we are successful we may also think of launching the product in India, as it is the booming market for small cars,' he said.
