For 2008, Ford resurrected two names: the Ford Taurus and the Mercury Sable, which replace the Ford Five Hundred and the Mercury Montego sedans. As for the Taurus X, the new-for-2008 name replaces 2007??s Freestyle crossover wagon. Along with their new names, all three models receive a freshened exterior and new engine and transmission options.

The word from Ford is that the 2008 Taurus X will hit showrooms later this summer; nothing specific has been announced as of June, but the 2008 Taurus and Sable are shipping and arriving dealerships right now, according to a Ford spokesperson. The 2008 Taurus X differs from the Freestyle because of a redesigned front end that borrows styling from the Edge crossover SUV. Also new is a more powerful engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the previous CVT. As with the first-generation Freestyle, you can get the Taurus X with front- or all-wheel drive.
