Heya I'm having the exact same problem with my car now and I have an Opel vita 1999 same as Nchimunya and its all because of the fan not functioning to do its job I had three points to look at which all connects as one in order for the fan to go and that was the relay switches as nchimunya has also said the gage switch which gives you the reading from the inside of what temperater your waters at and the thermastate switch which triggers the fan to let it know when it should come on to cool the inside where the engine and that is etc. . . you get all those checked out and their sweet and your fan is still not working then you have a wiring problem doubting in the from would most possibly be inside the car under the dash behind your covering... But most probably it'll be your relay switches and wiring :)
