1995 Nissan Mistral noise from drive train problems

| Problems: | My 2.7td mistral 1995 model with auto gearbox makes a grinding/knocking noise when moving off from a standing start, this only happens in two wheel drive,if I engage 4 WD the noise disappears and does not return until moving off from stop again. ( intermittantly). Jobs done up to now. 1. Auto gearbox assessed by a local trusted specialist. No problems 2. All oil levels checked. front diff was none existant, so changed the diff because of all of the metal deposits on the magnetic drain plug. ( not recommended lying on your back in the recent snow/ice)no change, noise still present. Oil in transfer needed 1 litre to bring up to filler plug. 3.Checked all of the propshafts/bearings and UJ's . no problems 4. I suspect its a problem with the transfer box but would appreciate any expert advice before I tackle this big job!!! ( remember I am lying on my back) Thanks in advance Tom | |
