2003 Mercedes-Benz S500 when locking car have to double click to stop sidelights flashing problems

Problems:When I lock the car using the remote the car locks but car lights keep flashing .I have to repeat click the remote then the flashing stops.
Sometimes I forget to repeat click this leaves the flashers continuing. When I return the battery is flat
