Arrow Volkswagen parades the Golf BlueMotion

Volkswagen parades the Golf BlueMotion

Volkswagen has released images of the forthcoming Golf BlueMotion as well as initial information. The new variant is set to have its world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show on 11 September.

The Golf is the fourth Volkswagen model to have the BlueMotion (high economy) suffix, following the Polo, Passat and Passat Variant. The car will go on sale across Europe in December.

The OEM is yet to divulge the cubic capacity of the Golf BlueMotion's engine, saying only that the TDI unit has maximum power of 103hp (77kW), and a torque rating of 250Nm (181 lb ft). Volkswagen claims an average fuel consumption of 22.2km/l and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 119g/km for the new version.

The OEM also claims that the Golf BlueMotion achieves the best fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in its class. Of the other vehicles under this label, the Polo BlueMotion has an average fuel consumption of 26.3km/l and emits 99g/km of CO2, while the Passat BlueMotion has an average fuel consumption of 19.6km/l, with CO2 emissions of 136g/km.

The changes to the Golf's turbodiesel unit include a tweaking of the engine management software to reduce idling speed, a new particulate filter and longer ratios in third, fourth and fifth gears. The radiator also features dual fans.

Aerodynamic optimisation, according to Volkswagen, includes a trimmed underbody, a nearly-enclosed radiator grille and a lowered chassis. This, along with low rolling resistance tyres, the OEM says, lift the Golf BlueMotion's (electronically limited) top speed to 190km/h, a claimed three km/h improvement.

Volkswagen has set the base price of the Golf BlueMotion at ?‚¬20,615 (US$28,020) in Germany, ?‚¬315 more than the base price of the equivalent Golf 1.9 TDI.
