MARKET INSIGHT: Borg Warner??”More Than the Indy 500 Trophy

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., April 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BorgWarner received a 2007 Automotive News PACE Award at a ceremony yesterday in Detroit for its innovative gasoline turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG(TM)). In addition, BorgWarner and Porsche were presented with two special PACE recognitions for their successful collaboration on the Porsche 911 Turbo. The innovations, the winning gasoline turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG(TM)) and the high energy ITM3e(TM) all-wheel drive system, were two of the six finalists in the Product Europe category. The PACE awards recognize automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.

"These prestigious awards acknowledge the extraordinary results that can be accomplished by people who are passionate about innovation," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO. "Together, Porsche and BorgWarner achieved two world-firsts in the automotive industry. We are proud to have the opportunity to collaborate with Porsche, combining our creative vision and engineering expertise to help build a vehicle that delivers a truly exceptional driving experience."

For the Porsche 911 Turbo, BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems developed and launched the world's first high-volume series variable turbine geometry (VTG(TM)) turbocharger for a gas-powered automobile. Although turbocharged diesel engines have enjoyed success for decades, a number of serious challenges had to be surmounted to develop a gasoline turbocharger. Electronically adjustable guide vanes, heat-resistant aerospace materials and BorgWarner's state-of-the-art turbocharging technology combined to create a gasoline VTG(TM) turbo system with powerful performance, lower operating costs and fuel consumption, and no turbo lag.

A finalist in the PACE competition, the electronically controlled multidisk clutch in the BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems high energy ITM3e(TM) all-wheel drive system responds to traction changes instantly, analyzing sensor data in real time and enabling immediate adjustments to the torque distribution between the front and rear axles. Referred to as Porsche Traction Management (PTM) by Porsche, the fully dynamic system provides noticeably improved traction, increased safety, excellent handling and a confidence- inspiring driving experience.

The 13th annual Automotive News PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence) Awards are recognized around the world as the industry symbol of innovation. The competition was open to suppliers who contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks. BorgWarner earned winner status following an extensive review by industry, academic and business leaders including a comprehensive written application and site visits to BorgWarner locations in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Arnstadt, Ketsch and Kirchheimbolanden, Germany. The special recognition for collaboration is granted at the discretion of PACE judges to acknowledge exceptional teamwork and collaboration between the OEM customer and supplier.
