Nissan Revamps X-Trail for Europe

While Canadians are saying "sayonara" to Nissan's X-Trail north of the border (the compact, RAV-4/CR-V-sized sport utility vehicle that wasn't sold in the US) and ushering in its replacement, the all-new Rogue, the rest of the world is doing something different. Surprisingly, Nissan has chosen to keep the X-Trail as a part of its global lineup, despite the world-wide addition of a Rogue-like model called the Qashqai. Even more surprising is what they've done to the X-Trail, namely, release the second generation model at Geneva, despite the fact that it's a spitting image of the car it replaces.

Having sold on average 135-percent of expected volumes over its lifespan and a repeat customer rate of 30-percent, Nissan found true success in the X-Trail's outdoorsy demeanor. The one thing that customers requested Nissan do is not change the crossover's overall design, which is a bit tough to do for a vehicle that was at the end of its product cycle. Nissan's job was to make the X-Trail better in every way possible, while keeping as many of the vehicle's characteristics the same. The resulting product therefore looks the same, despite riding on a completely newchassis that boasts new dimensions, more powerful engines, better amenities, more cargo space and a proper four-wheel drive system. In Nissan's own words, they've added "XTRAILness".

More obvious changes can be spotted inside; the X-Trail's center-mounted instrument cluster has moved in front of the driver, and the console has been redesigned to be more user-friendly. Larger cubbies provide a convenient place to stash clutter, while the cargo bay has been increased to an impressive 21.3 cu-ft with the rear 40/20/40 split bench upright. The interior is finished with higher quality plastics, although the rear cargo area is made out of a non-slip plastic for easy cleaning.

The underpinnings of the new X-Trail are from the Qashqai (Euro Rogue), and are a generation ahead of the current vehicle, offering greater comfort, refinement and crash protection. Buyers are presented with a brand new selection of engines including new diesels that make up to 173 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

The other new addition is ALL MODE 4X4, Nissan's electronically controlled all wheel drive system. It features three main modes controlled by a rotary knob: 2WD, Auto - which distributes power to all four wheels, shifting it about as needed - and Lock. The system also includes Uphill Start Support, a sort of hill-holding system for easier starts, and Downhill Drive Support, Nissan's version of hill descent control.

When it comes down to choice, Nissan can't be beat when it comes to SUV or crossover-style vehicles. Currently, it offers five models in Europe, and five models as of 2008 in North America.
