Mercedes-Benz C-Class

What is it with German car makers? First BMW and now Mercedes have replaced previously elegant models with aggressive, angular styling and sharp suits. Maybe I'm too much of a traditionalist but BMW's replacement of the sculptured lines of the previous model 3- and 5-Series with today's hard-edged Bangle styling has just been trumped by the new W204 Mercedes C-Class ??“ hard-faced and bold where the previous W203 was sinuously soft-lined and elegant.

But hey, we all have to adapt. The good news is that in every other respect the new C-Class is a cracking premium saloon with exceptional driver appeal, outstanding handling, impressive safety and a level of quality Mercedes can again be proud to say carries their three-pointed star.

Standard equipment has been boosted and the model line up has been simplified ??“ entry-level SE, Elegance (an extra ??1195) and Sport (an extra ??2895). The new car is longer, taller and wider than before with more room for occupants and luggage. Engines are familiar but with increased outputs, better refinement, cleaner emissions and lower fuel consumption

The car has a genuinely solid feel despite reflecting today's trend towards thin skin panels. The underpinnings are superbly engineered with substantial suspension components, powerful brakes and a chassis tuned to deliver that elusive combination of taut, responsive handling while being supple, comfortable and smooth-riding.

Seating is firm but supportive, the dashboard a vast expanse of soft-touch plastic highlighted with a choice of lacquered black trim or wood inserts and the instruments and switchgear have the traditional Mercedes feel of a well-thought out and quality workstation for the driver.
