Arrow Residual values remain strong for Mazda RX-8

Residual values remain strong for head-turning Mazda RX-8

The head-turning Mazda RX-8 continues to provide cost-conscious fleet decision??‘makers with fantastic affordability, according to residual value experts.

Launched just over three years ago, the radically-styled and engineered RX-8 retains its driver wow-factor ensuring early defleeted company cars are in hot demand in the used car market.

Used car valuation experts at CAP Motor Research predict that the four-door, four??‘seat coupe, which debuted in 2003, will still retain almost 40 per cent of new retail price - ??21,150 for the 192ps model and ??22,650 for the 231ps derivative at three-years/60,000 miles - while early models now reaching used car forecourts are retailing at ??10,150 upwards.

Latest CAP data shows that fleets taking delivery of a 192ps model today will see it worth ??8,150 (39%) at disposal time at the benchmark period, while a 231ps derivative will be worth ??8,925 (39%).

Jeff Knight, forecast manager for CAP, said: The RX-8 continues to have driver appeal. Although it has been on the roads for four years the car continues to have a wow factor as it looks good and is completely different in styling from any other model.

While the Mazda RX-8 remains the cost-effective choice for fleet decision-makers and benefit-in-kind tax paying company car drivers when compared with two-door coupes and hot saloons from manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Honda, Subaru, Toyota and Vauxhall, secondhand car price watchers say the car is also value for money for prospective used car buyers.

Used sticker price on an 03-plated 192ps with 60,000 miles on the clock continues to be over ??10,000, according to CAP, while a 53 model at similar mileage will retail at around ??10,395. Move up to the 231ps and an 03 model will cost around ??11,250 at 60,000 miles with a 53 version costing around ??11,495.

Simon Harris, consumer editor at car buying guide Parkers said: Used car buyers are attracted by the RX-8s status as a stylish sports coup?© with room for four *****s plus luggage. It isnt merely a coupe version of a less exciting upper-medium saloon it has proper sportscar styling and handling, and is very well equipped.

Drivers have adopted the charismatic rotary engine, whose compact design has played its part in achieving superb handling and Smart packaging, giving the Mazda RX??‘8 broad appeal and strengthening demand for used examples.

Meanwhile, referring to Mazdas clever coupe and its attractiveness to secondhand buyers with early examples costing just over ??10,000, Auto Express reported (28 February, 2007): Thats not bad when you consider its fantastic rear-wheel drive handling is the envy of many motors costing twice the price. Later examples also look good value. I cant think of anything that offers so much style and performance for so little money.

The balance from a cash perspective is fine between ensuring fleet demand remains buoyant when vehicles are in their fourth year on sale, while aiming to make those same models also highly desirable for used car buyers. However, that is what Mazda has achieved with the RX-8 and fleet and remarketing director James Hopkins said: The car created its own market niche when it was launched and it still has no direct competitors.

The RX-8 continues to attract motorists from both the premium four-door saloon market as well as from the two-seat car sector as it is both aspirational and desirable from the perspectives of fleet decision-makers and company car drivers.

The car has contributed hugely to Mazda being Britains favourite sports car brand and we see that continuing unchanged with the RX-8 providing value for money for both fleets and used car buyers alike.

Designed with both fun and functionality in mind the Mazda RX-8 with its 1.3 litre rotary engine is a high-performance sports car featuring a unique freestyle door system allowing easy access to the rear two seats with comfortable seating for four *****s.

Standard equipment on both models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution, driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, climate control air conditioning and a BOSE Premium Audio sound system with nine speakers and a six CD auto-changer.
