Maruti SX4 rumored to have overtaken Honda City in sales

As per unofficial figures, recently launched Maruti SX4 seems to have overtaken the market leaders Honda City in terms of sales.

Maruti is yet to reveal the retail figures of SX4 for the first six-week period following the May 7 launch. However they are claiming to have dispatched about 3,000 units during the period.

But this figure would include the cars which are being displayed in showrooms and are being offered for test rides to prospective customers.

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has stated in a report that Maruti sold 5,008 units in the A3 segment in May.

For Maruti, this means that their market share in the A3 segment has virtually doubled to 25.2 per cent. And Hondas market share has now fallen from 22 per cent to 14.2 per cent.

Jnaneswar Sen, senior general manager - marketing, HSCI has admitted that recent competition from Maruti SX4 and Renault Logan has done damage to their market share. He said: ??There is some initial disturbance (in the sales of the City) which was expected. But in the long run, we will aim to maintain our leadership in the segment.??

Rajesh Jejurikar, MD, Mahindra Logan spoke about the Renault Logan: ??Our biggest selling point for Logan is the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, which is better than the competitors (City and SX4). Moreover, we will be ramping up capacity from July, working on one-and-a-half shift basis. The factory will work on full capacity from August onwards.??
