Honda Civic Type R Review

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is a standard feature on the Civic but it has a little extra for the Type R and allows for an element of fun before breaking up the party. Alternatively it can be switched off altogether leaving only the ABS with EBD and Emergency Brake Assist. If all else fails there are dual, front and side airbags to cushion the blow.

Official fuel economy figures go out of the window when the car is driven hard but more cautious drivers can expect to get somewhere near 22.2mpg for the urban cycle, 40.4mpg for the extra-urban or 31mpg for the combined and chug 215g/km of CO2 out of the twin, triangular tailpipes, in the process.

The Type R comes in standard and GT models priced at ??17,600 and ??18,600 respectively. Non-intrusive driving aids aside, the Civic Type R is well specified. Highlights include; drilled aluminium pedals and footrest, an alloy gear knob for the new 6-speed manual box, a leather-covered, multifunctional, adjustable for rake and reach, steering wheel, Type R Alcantara-clad sports seats and height-adjustment for the driver. The GT drivers get cruise control, curtain airbags a CAT1 alarm system, dual-zone climate control and auto wipers and headlights, plus front fogs for the extra ??1,000.

In-car entertainment is superfluous but nonetheless the Type R has a radio/CD player, while DVD-based Satellite-Navigation with voice recognition and Integrated Bluetooth, hands-free telephone system are optional on the GT.

Before ending, I??™ll leave you with a snippet of information. As you sit in the Type R on your test drive basking in the red, not blue, glow from the instrument panel, think on this; apparently, there has never, ever been a reported failure of a Honda VTEC system anywhere in the world.
