CAR: BMW 3 Series Convertible Range

BMW Launches 1-Series Cabriolet

BMW has pulled the wraps off its 1 Series cabriolet. The newcomer is joining the coupe sibling as well as its three- and five door hatchback in the 1 Series line-up.

It takes its design cues of BMW's CS1 concept car.

This new 1 Series model will be launched in South Africa in the second quarter of 2008 in two models: the 115-kW 120i Convertible and the 160-kW 125i Convertible.

A 225-kW BMW 135i Convertible will follow three months later.

The car, which is a four seater, features a fabric roof which BMW says opens and closes in 22 seconds, and can operate at low speeds yet.

The BMW 1 Series Convertible features an electro-hydraulically operated fabric roof that opens and closes within 22 seconds - nd if necessary can be operated while on the move at low speed.

According to BMW its new drop-top is available with an optional anthracite roof cover with "interwoven shiny fibres". This gives the material a metallic shimmering surface impression, which produces charming reflections in sunlight.

Luggage space is 280 litres with the roof up, or 240 with it folded away.

It also features a leather trim with BMW's Sun Reflective Technology.

Safety is apparently top notch too with high strength steel, additional reinforcement and special deformation elements ensuring that the impact energy will be absorbed in a crash.

There are also all the usual passive and active safety equipment.
