Subaru Legacy Review 1998

Date:October 27, 2005, 2:36 am
Name, Location:xcvii90
Vehicle:Subaru Legacy Wagon
Year:1998
Modification:Subaru Legacy L Wagon
General comments:I wanted to find a mid-sized vehicle that could haul 4 adults comfortably, got reasonably good fuel economy, had 4wd for trips to snow country, had a manual transmission, and could handle the twisty mountain roads in the Santa Cruz mountains of California. The Subaru Legacy wagon was the obvious choice. When traveling to the Sierras in a snowstorm, the Legacy is allowed to pass without chains. With the rear seats down, I can haul four full 30-gallon Rubbermaid trash cans. I drive aggressively on Highway 9, and the Legacy handles like no SUV ever could. My biggest complaint is that I am a little disappointed with the fuel economy. I was hoping to find a car that got around 30 mpg. This thirsty girl gets around 23 mpg in town and 27 on the highway. For that kind of gas mileage, I would expect a lot more power than the 2.2L engine generates. The only problem I have had in 85,000 miles was a faulty alternator. It died at 30,000 miles, and was replace by Subaru for free. I feel that this was a fluke, and not a real fault of the car. I would buy another Legacy wagon in an instant, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking for a practical, reliable, safe, family-friendly car that is fun to drive, and has plenty of cargo room.
What things have gone wrong with the car:Fuel Economy leaves a lot to be desired;
The dash mounted cup holder obstructs the radio and HVAC controls when deployed.
Previous car:1983 Subaru GL that lasted 226,000 miles before I totaled it.
