change air filter....clogged air filter causes more fuel to be sucked into the engine. or else it could mass air flow sensor which precisely measures the air-fuel ratio. start with clean new air filter and then check the mass air flow sensor. or it could be throttle body too! you have to check and systematically eliminate possibilities/causes.

Sometimes proper tunning could solve the problem of high consumption of fuel. Try to tune your car from a well reputed garage or an experienced person to solve the problem.

You are absolutely correct Mazhar. For the pre-90's car which are controlled by mechanical linkages (direct cables, wires)required quite a good tune ups at regular intervals . Since 1990's cars are using computers a lot to make real time calculations and performance adjustments as we drive. The tune up has come down to changing plugs, fuel injectors, filters and engine oil change, timing belt/chain replacement (costly but more widetr frequency). Excessive fuel connsumption is related to: 1.blocked or clogged air filter (because air is blocked and hence, engine uses/ requires more fuel to run!), 2. spark plug, 3.broken injector (that will show up as an error code (I think the code reader is available only at dealers though it is a 150 dollar item that you can hook up to a car and read the code and fined out what is wrong. You can do a step-by-step diagnostics and narrow down to one problem. You can change the air filter by yourself and see if it makes teh difference. If not then move to next.
