Not sure abt the sound, but high consumption depends on what yu call high. This is a 3 litre engine. Its thirsty. My '99 gives me an average of 8-9 kms/ltr city driving and over 11kms/ltr freeway cruises. Timing belt usually after 100 000kms. Get it inspeced for visible cracks and sharp squeeks when yu start it cold. When yu change it, make sure yu change the other belts like steering and aircon belts as well as water pump coz yu pay labour twice if yu change belts and pump separately. Their procedure is the same. When yu change belts also ensure yu get new idlers and tensioner for the timing belt. Good luck
