AFS and Night Vision: Availability Expanding in Europe; the Next E-Class to be equipped with full AFSNight Vision to be used in DaimlerChrysler's S-Class and BMW's 5/6/7 Series
Jun. 7, 2006 No.474

Reported below are the market trends of the Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) and Night Vision System that are becoming growingly popular.

In Japan, the use of AFS was allowed legally after the revision of the Notification for the Establishment of Details of Security Standards for Motor Vehicles in October 2002, and the first AFS was adopted in Toyota's new Harrier that debuted in February 2003. Nissan and Honda also followed suit in 2003 while Mazda adopted its first AFS on the new MPV that was launched in February 2006. Toyota's AFS is available on higher-end models but Nissan has its counterpart available in smaller models (1500-2000cc classes) as well.

The use of AFS was allowed also in Europe in February 2003 and Opel launched Vectra and Signum in 2003 that featured AFS. Availability of AFS is expanding since then. In 2005, Hella and Valeo, the leading suppliers of the system, announced plans to supply AFS to new models that included Land Rover, VW/Audi, PSA, BMW and DaimlerChrysler (DCX). Incidentally, DCX announced during the 2006 New York Auto Show that a next-generation AFS, co-developed by Hella and designed to automatically adapt illumination to road and weather conditions, in addition to adaptive lighting in curves, would be featured in its next model of the E-Class cars.

Among the US models by GM, Ford and Chrysler, Ford's Lincoln MKX slated for market launch in 2006 fall by Ford will have the AFS feature.

GM's Cadillac Deville, launched in 2000, was the first car with the Night Vision feature (discontinued in 2004 due to sluggish sales). In Japan, Night Vision was made available by Toyota on Land Cruiser Cygnus in 2002 and by Honda on Legend in 2004. In Europe, it was adopted by DCX on S-Class and BMW on 7 Series, both in 2005 fall. More recently, BMW expanded the availability to 5 and 6-Series while DCX is said to adopt Night Vision in more models and VW is said to be studying the feasibility of using the system.

AFS in Japan: Introduced by Toyota, Nissan and Honda in 2003, by Mazda in 2006

In Japan, AFS is adopted by Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Mazda. AFS is available in two types; (1) AFS with swiveling low-beam unit and (2) AFS with a fixed low-beam lamp and swiveling AFS lamp positioned under the low-beam lamp.

Toyota: New Estima launched in January 2006 has AFS with synchronized low-beam lamps

The new Harrier, launched by Toyota in February 2003, was the world's first car (according to Toyota sources) that featured Intelligent AFS.

Most of Toyota cars with the adaptive front lighting system have low-beam lamps only the inner one of which rotates when the car is running along a curve. But Crown Royal and Crown Athlete launched in December 2003 feature AFS that have dedicated AFS lamps that rotate at the curves.

The new Estima, launched in January 2006, has AFS in which only the inner low-beam lamp rotates at curves but both the right and left low-beam lamps rotate simultaneously when the car is running at speeds over 30km/h.

(Notes) 1. The launch date under Alphard applies to the partially remodeled car.
2. Lexus IS has also a special headlamp system that lights four high-beam lamps in total during high-beam mode by radiating high beams from the low-beam lamps.
3. The ECU for AFS, co-developed by Denso, Toyota and Koito Manufacturing reflecting 70% reduction in volume from the previous model, was adopted in Estima that debuted in January 2006.

Nissan: Dedicated and other types of AFS adopted in 1500-2000cc class models as well

Nissan installed its first Active AFS in Cima when it was partially remodeled in August 2003.

Nissan's front lighting systems mainly feature dedicated AFS lamps but FUGA and ElGrand have a system in which the low-beam lamps rotate.

Characteristically, Nissan's AFS is available in 1500-2000cc class cars (TIIDA, TIIDA LATIO, Wingroad, Bluebird Sylphy) as well that were launched in late-2004 to 2005
