Arrow Autopackage: A quick run around in a 2007 Mazda CX-9

The CX-9 is really the now-familiar CX-7 on steroids -- somewhat longer, broader and standing taller than its smaller sibling and sitting on a chassis based on that which supports the Mazda6 sedan. Otherwise, it has that Mazda trademark look, which graces a huge number of driveways these days. It has a raked windshield, which certainly contributes to the sporty look.

The bulking up pays off in interior space and easy access to all three rows of seats, not to mention good leg- and headroom. The back-row inhabitants gain entry by sliding forward a second-row seat. Lots of stowage space, including bottle slots in the doors. The base model has a classy cloth interior, but the GT lays on the luxury with wood and leather trim.

Standard fare includes dual front airbags, side airbags, curtain airbags, dynamic stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control and roll stability control.

The beast is powered by a 3.5-litre, DOHC 24-valve V6 with 263 available horses coupled to a six-speed Sportmode automatic transmission.

Not yet calculated.

Roadside Assistance: Three years/unlimited km

QUICK SPIN

It's another car-like handling crossover with mini-van-type occupancy possibilities. Commanding view of the road offered from the easily adjustable driver's seat, a little challenging to park, but practice makes perfect. Nice ride on the freeway with ample power to pull it when fully loaded with human cargo or otherwise.

MY TAKE

Mazda tiptoes into the semi-luxury segments with its loaded GT execution. Worthy competitor to the Hyundai santa Fe/Veracruz, Honda Pilot , Toyota Highlander, Chrysler pacifica , Ford Edge et al.

BOTTOM LINE

$39,595 to $43,955

Mea Culpa: In the last Quick Spin report on the Acura CSX , in my enthusiasm to be helpful I suggested readers might want to "move on to the next step up -- the Acura RSX." I should have said TSX, as the RSX is now discontinued. Wish they would get away from letter designations and back to memorable names!
